Goldendoodle grooming

fleece/wool/straight cross · professional groom roughly every 7 weeks

The Goldendoodle — Golden Retriever × Poodle — is a big, sociable dog under a lot of coat. Like all doodles, the coat is variable; unlike smaller doodles, when a Goldendoodle mats, you're dealing with it across 25–35kg of enthusiastic dog.

The coat

Three broad types: fleece (soft waves, the most common), wool (tight curls, lowest shedding, highest upkeep) and straight/hair coats (flatter, more Retriever-like, often with an undercoat that sheds). Wavy and curly coats mat at friction points and wherever water and mud get involved — which, for a Goldendoodle, is everywhere.

How often should a Goldendoodle be groomed?

Every 6–8 weeks professionally for fleece and wool coats; straight coats can go 8–12 weeks with weekly deshedding at home. Line-brush to the skin two or three times a week — a metal comb must reach the root everywhere, especially ears, armpits, harness line and trousers. Book the first groom young and keep visits regular: drying a big doodle is a long job, and a dog that's relaxed on the table gets a better finish.

What does Goldendoodle grooming cost?

Size is the price driver: expect £60–90 for a full groom, at the top of that range (or beyond) in London and for standard-sized dogs. Minis typically run £48–65. Matted coats are charged by time or shaved off — on a dog this size, prevention is worth real money.

Between grooms

Brush in sections down to the skin, rinse and dry after swimming, and towel-then-brush after wet walks. Watch the ears: doodle ears are heavy, hairy and prone to trapping moisture. If the comb starts snagging in the usual zones, book the groom early — a fortnight's delay on a matting Goldendoodle coat can be the difference between a tidy-up and a shave-off.
