The Miniature Schnauzer — far and away the most common of the three Schnauzer sizes in the UK — wears one of the most recognisable grooms in dogdom: the wiry jacket, the skirt, the eyebrows and that beard. Keeping the pattern sharp is straightforward; keeping the correct coat texture is the real decision.
The coat
A hard, wiry topcoat over a dense undercoat, with longer furnishings on the legs, skirt, eyebrows and beard. Like all wire coats, it's naturally weatherproof and sheds very little — but clipping gradually replaces the harsh jacket with soft, greyer fluff. The furnishings, which are never stripped, mat readily and need regular combing regardless of how the body is maintained.
How often should a Schnauzer be groomed?
Every 6–8 weeks. Hand-stripped show coats work on a rolling cycle (every 4–6 weeks); clipped pets on the standard 6–8. The beard needs attention at home several times a week — it collects food, water and garden debris, and a matted beard is miserable for the dog.

A clipped breed-pattern groom typically runs £38–52 for a Miniature; Standards cost more. Hand-stripping, where offered, is priced by time — usually £50–80+. Beard dematting can add to any bill; daily beard combing is free.
Between grooms
Comb the beard and eyebrows daily-ish, rinse the beard after wet or messy meals, and comb the skirt and leg furnishings twice a week. Check armpits and behind the front legs — the skirt hides mats there. Schnauzer skin can be prone to comedones ("Schnauzer bumps"); if your groomer mentions them, a chat with your vet about coat and skin care routines is worthwhile.
